about

Equal parts mysterious fizz, degraded beats, hissing samples, and haunting loops, The Gifts’ first release, Flyboyy Artifacts, is a focused collection of lo-fi meditations from producer Jeremy Mendicino.

Inspired by the thoughtfully broken compositions of Aphex Twin and Christian Fennesz, the bit-reduced textures of Autechre and early computer music, and the fluid polyphonic depth of Brian Eno’s most meandering work, Flyboyy Artifacts wraps post-guitar composition with a soft anxiety and narcotic optimism that speaks to more than a decade of studio experimentation.

Though Flyboyy Artifacts takes pleasure in the articulation of synthetic corrosion and the meticulous placement of mechanical sound, special attention is also paid to the manipulation of the human voice, creating an otherworldly layer suggestive of memory, breath, and something beyond the corporeal.

Mendicino describes the process of recording Flyboyy Artifacts as a search for something that was hiding in silence which merely had to be uncovered. And when describing his relationship to music he oscillates freely between the language of a mystic and that of a technician. It is exactly this relationship between the blindly spiritual and the hyper-rational that defines the tension of the music he creates as The Gifts.
